3 steps to a relaxed newborn photoshoot

If this is your first time participating in a newborn photoshoot, you might imagine they can sometimes be a little unpredictable. While that can be true, it's not nearly as chaotic or stressful behind the scenes than you may think.

To prepare for a newborn photoshoot, I like to share with my clients what they can expect and things they should know so we can all have a relaxed and enjoyable experience. I would like you to look back on the day and remember how tiny and adorable your little one was and how pleasant it was to capture those precious memories together.

1) Know that your baby is perfect just the way they are.

We’ve all seen those famous portraits of perfectly dressed babies in perfect poses with perfectly accessorized sets. But that’s not real or natural. Your baby is perfect just the way they are, which is precisely how I like to photograph them. I recommend simple outfits with no distractions. This allows the focus to be on your baby and the perfect faces and poses that come naturally.

2) If the baby is fussy, we'll take a break.

Many parents worry about how to keep their baby happy and calm during their newborn photoshoot. While I understand the concern, I also understand that babies get fussy, and all the planning and worrying in the world won’t change that. Therefore, I purposely plan for breaks during our session, so you and the baby have plenty of time to take a break from being in front of the camera if needed.

3) Pack your diaper bag with essentials for you as well.

While you probably have a plan for everything you will need for your baby during their newborn photoshoot, remember to pack the things you might need, too! I suggest extra snacks, a water bottle, and a change of clothes. It's easy to think only about what to bring for the baby, but we need you to feel your best as well.
